In this installment of Rap Nerd Reviews, I dive into the experimental world of YUNG MAS and his latest album, #GLM. The 10-track project showcases a unique approach to hip hop, blending dark vibes and unconventional production techniques. However, while the concept is ambitious, it doesn’t always hit the mark.
First Impressions
The album artwork caught my attention right away—minimalistic yet intriguing with its three green lights. This set the stage for what promised to be an experimental journey. However, as I progressed through the tracks, the execution left something to be desired.
What Worked
Tracks like “Amiri” and “Kissing Cousins” stood out with strong energy and replay potential. These songs carried a vibe reminiscent of dark, atmospheric hip hop in the vein of classic Bone Thugs-N-Harmony or early Three 6 Mafia.
YUNG MAS demonstrates an intriguing creative vision with a style that aligns with the gritty, underground hip hop aesthetic.
What Didn’t Work
Mixing and Mastering Issues: The production lacked polish, with vocals often buried beneath the beats and ad-libs overpowering the main verses. This made it hard to catch the lyrical content and fully immerse in the music.
Overuse of Filters: Many tracks featured heavy low-pass filters and effects that disrupted the flow of the songs, making them feel disjointed.
Lack of Clarity: The abstract sound design overshadowed the artist's voice, leaving the lyrical content difficult to understand.
